A fairy taleOnce upon a time there was an out of the way place, a small town, where everyone knew each other. And it was the place, where Mr. Benjamin lived. He was a nice clumsy and very optimistic man, a widower with a little daughter Lydia.
He worked as a journalist, wrote small notes for a local newspaper. Mr. Benjamin liked writing, but this job didn’t suit him, mostly because of his superior Mr. Bennet. Mr. Bennet was a very ignorant man, who was full of prejudices and always turned down all the initiatives of his inferiors. He even insulted Mr. Benjamin once, when he didn’t come to work because of Lydia’s illness. But Mr. Benjamin had to put up with all of this because you always needed money when at home you had a young lady, who attached importance to everything including the compatibility of her socks and hair clips, and Mr. Bennet, although being an unscrupulous man, never held back wages.
However, the only time when Mr. Benjamin felt free was in the evening when he sat at Lydia’s bed and told her stories he had written himself. He dreamt one day he would publish a book with fairy tales, so all moms and dads could read them to their children. And although sometimes he felt discouraged, he never gave up and never dropped that idea.
Gradually he accumulated a lot of tales and saved a little money. The problem was he couldn’t find anybody, who could illustrate them.
But the fate stepped in. A nice young woman moved into the house next door. She turned up on their threshold one day and asked Mr. Benjamin for help. While he helped her carrying boxes, he learnt that she was single, didn’t have children, worked as a photographer and drew comics in her spare time.
And Mr. Benjamin suddenly confessed to her that he had written a book for children, but the book looked dull without pictures. His new neighbour Ms. Bradshaw immediately volunteered to help him with this problem.
And she did.
They met almost every evening, drank tea and talked. She read his book and drew wonderful pictures to each tale. They got to know each other and little Lydia doted on Ms. Bradshaw. So there was no surprise when one night she stayed to listen to a new fairy tale and one day she stayed forever.
They published their first book, then the next one and one more.
Mr. Benjamin got a lot of money, so he gave Mr. Bennet a notice and lived with his girls happily ever after.
